Brabham BT62 sets lap record at The Bend – West circuit

The Brabham BT62 – still wearing the livery from its maiden victory at Brands Hatch – took on some searing heat and multiple class-winners from across the motorsport spectrum to set a new lap record at The Bend’s 3.4km West Circuit at the weekend.

The occasion was The Bend Classic, a new annual event at The Bend Motorsport Park, a world-class, FIA rated facility developed 100km south-east of Brabham Automotive’s home base in Adelaide, South Australia.

The weekend saw temperatures peak at 39C degrees just as competitors embarked on the ‘shootout’ laps to determine the fastest lap of the day.  Cars raced all weekend within their class – including GT3 and open wheelers - to win the right to compete in a fastest-lap ‘shootout’ to conclude the weekend’s action.

With Australian driver, Ash Walsh, behind the wheel the BT62 conquered both the track and the heat to set an officially-timed new lap record for The Bend’s West Circuit, a scorching 1:15.0214 seconds.

After the event, Walsh indicated there was still plenty of room to improve:

“It was the first time that I’ve done a Shootout style lap in the car. The car is just so fast so any lap you get to do in it, really, is pretty fun. It puts a big smile on your face.

“I missed the hairpin a little and dropped some time as the tyres were cold and the brakes were not up to temperature, but overall I was really happy with it in the end.

“It’s great to get out here and be involved in the event – the first one at The Bend.

“It’s the first win for the car on Australian soil and it’s great to get the car out in front of everyone and get it amongst people to show what it’s about.”

The Brabham BT62 will now embark on series of events commencing in early 2020.
